Labour of Love: Successful Work-Life Balance

by Ruth on November 7, 2012

in Motherhood, Work and Entrepreneurship

Mompreneurship is something very close to my heart. To me, it’s not just about a way moms can find better work-life balance, more than that, it is also a way through which moms can pursue their passion while earning an income.

I began working freelance before I even became a mom. While wanting to find meaningful work was a motivating factor, the other reason was that I always wanted to be a work-at-home mom. Anticipating that the switch will likely be more difficult after I have a child, I left the corporate world before I became a parent.

Today, I am thankful I get to do what I love as a freelance writer and being able to stay home with my child.

The other thing about my work is that I get to choose projects I want to work on, and for the past few months, I’ve been labouring over a certain project that will soon birth forth something real soon.

While I had to go through some pretty tough times recently, working on this project reminded me of how blessed I am and helped me focus on the brighter side of things.

In just two days’ time it will be out in public. But I’m so excited I just can’t keep quiet about it anymore! I’ll let the pictures do the talking….

Yes, it’s a book!!! A book that I have the privilege and honor of co-authoring with Sher-li Torrey, Founder of Mums@Work.

This is no doubt a huge milestone for me as a writer. But it’s something more than that.

It’s about my desire to encourage other moms who are hoping to find better work-life balance, be it through flexi-work or starting a business, that it can be done. It may not be easy, it may not be achieved as fast as you would like it to be (not everything in life can be done as quickly as making a cup of instant noodles), but it can be done.

Sometimes, it calls for sacrifices. As the saying goes, no pain no gain. Ask every entrepreneur who have made it big and I believe they will tell you they have sacrificed something for their success.

You just have to know what sacrifices are involved, if you are willing to make those sacrifices and what you want to achieve – the privilege of being there with your child especially during the formative years, not missing out on their milestones, playing an active role in shaping their values and molding their character. So if this is what you desire, plan, research, get help and step by step, you can get there.

With this book, it is my hope that moms will find some ideas about what they can do to achieve better work-life balance, and be inspired by the real life stories of moms who had “been there, done that”.
