From Liver and Gallbladder Cleanse to New Breakfast Habit

A while back, I read from a friend’s Facebook page about a ‘natural way’ to remove gallstones. I didn’t know what came over me but I showed it to my husband and asked if he was game to give it a try. To my surprise, he said yes.

The cleanse regime went something like this: For five consecutive days, we were supposed to eat four to five apples everyday. To make things easier, we simply ate apples for breakfast.

On the sixth day, we fasted and didn’t have dinner. In addition, we were supposed to drink a glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of Epsom salt at 6pm, then repeat it two hours later. Then at 10pm, we need to take half cup olive oil mixed with half cup fresh lemon juice. Do the concoctions sound awful? Well, we sure thought so!

I thought drinking the lemon juice in olive oil would be the hardest but when I finally drank it, it wasn’t that bad. Not that it’s tasty, but it wasn’t horrible either. For me, the Epsom salt part was worse. Anyway, according to the report, one would pass out green stones in the stools  the next morning.

So we waited. In the end, we didn’t find any green stones, at least not that we could see them! I guessed partly it was because we didn’t do the cleanse properly. Thinking that we were not allowed to have dinner, we decided to enjoy a nice lunch and had our favorite claypot laksa. No wonder we didn’t get any ‘results’!

Later, I researched online and found the instructions were a bit different/more detailed from what I read on Facebook (which said we could only have light meals on Day 6).

On hindsight, I thought what we did was pretty hilarious. Nevertheless, the experience did turn out to be a positive event.

My husband said he felt healthier after eating apples for breakfast for almost a week and suggested we stick with it.

So we have been having apples for breakfast almost every day for a year. Of course, we include other fruits too.

Personally, my breakfast has evolved into mainly plain yogurt (Dairy Farmers’s Greek style natural yogurt is my current favorite brand) with fruits, nut and seeds. These would include almond, cashew nut, sunflower seed, sesame and chia seeds.

Talking about chia seeds, these teeny weeny seeds really pack a punch. I first learnt about them from an article on the Little Green Dot, where Militza shared about their benefits and how it’s given her more energy. As a mom, that is really great news and I just had to try it out. And it worked! So besides taking it with yogurt, I also add to my water. However, there are some people who should stay away from these tiny seeds:

Pregnant and lactating mothers should keep away from chia seeds as there is not enough researches about its effects on them.

Chia contains a lot of alpha-linolenic acid and some research suggests that large amounts of alpha-linolenic acid in the diet might increase the chance of getting prostate cancer. So men have to note.
