Hi! Welcome to Mommy Café! I’m glad you’re here *big smile and a warm hug*
I’m Ruth, a freelance writer, wife and mom to a precious boy. I’m also a Singapore mom blogger. I started this blog with the main intention of recording my boy’s growing up (because I realised how bad my memory has become after the delivery, no thanks to being in a constant sleep deprived mode). Along the way, the blog has evolved into a place where I share about my passions and things close to my heart.
Ready to know more about me?
I can speak three languages fluently: English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
I have long hair since my teens. The only time I had it short was when I was pregnant (cut in my first trimester) because I thought I would not be in the best state to take care of my tresses. I was wrong. I should have cut it only after giving birth.
I still have long hair, because my boy refuses to let me cut it short. I’m serious.
I met my husband in the university (nope, he’s not my first boyfriend) through its online chatroom. Back in the 1990s, we were definitely at the frontier of what’s now known as “online dating”!
I’m a trained image consultant and have the privilege of being trained by Christina Ong, the doyenne of Singapore’s image consulting industry and one of only 10 AICI Certified Image Masters in the world. If you have any style related questions, feel free to send me a note via the Contact page, I’ll be happy to answer them.
I’m an introvert at heart; I enjoy solitude and silence. But I also like meeting new people and believe relationships are what truly make life beautiful and meaningful. That’s why I’m motivated to keep blogging. As a work-at-home-mom, it’s a way for me to meet new friends and connect with like-minded people.
Know me a bit better now? There’s more.
I love kids. Friends know how much I love to play with small children. But for a while, I struggled with the idea of having a child as I thought it would hinder my work. I relented because my husband wanted very much to have a kid. Even during my pregnancy, when I was suffering very bad morning sickness, I would wonder if I made the right decision.
However, I guess God, in His love and grace, wanted to assure me that He will be my guide and help. He chose a very special day (my birthday), to usher me into one of the most amazing journeys of my life: the journey of motherhood, with all its frustrations, agony, exhilaration and joy immeasurable.
Sharing the same birthday as my son is to me, something truly amazing and miraculous. I’m thankful that God didn’t allow my fears to stop me from enjoying something as special as being a mom.
By the way, my boy, eager to share the same birthday as mommy, popped three weeks early. He turned out to be quite a mommy’s boy *smiles*
Three years into mommyhood, I must say it’s the best thing that has happened in my life so far. It’s definitely not the easiest, but it’s the most exciting journey I’ve ever been on, and it’s totally changed my life. It has also opened new doors to adventures and new beginnings which would not have otherwise been possible.
Being a mom motivates me to be a better person. It gives me courage to pursue my dreams and passion (such as publishing a book), and inspires me to live a rich, meaningful life.
I hope that through this blog, we can encourage and inspire one another on this great journey call Motherhood.
Why call Mommy Café?
I LOVE hanging out at cafes. It’s where I have heart-to-heart talks with friends, chill out with my hubby, spend solitary moments with a book in hand, do my work, plan my future and very often, to people-watch.
In starting this blog, I aimed to create the same kind of cosy space – online – to share about my life as a work-at-home-mom, as well as to connect with other moms.
About my work
I’m a freelance writer.
Prior to this, I had been a social worker and a human resource professional where I worked in industries such as banking, retail and manufacturing.
In spite of the invaluable skills and experiences I’ve gained during those years, I never felt truly happy or satisfied. It was only when I embarked on a journey to rediscover my strengths and passions that my life was transformed.
Today, I’m blessed to be living my dreams doing what I enjoy the most: writing and, blogging.
Thank you for reading. I look forward to having you here again. Do leave me a comment when you visit, I love to hear from you!
